AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

VARIOUS EASTER MEETINGS. | UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT. D. EVANS BEATEN IN TRIAL. Auckland athleies competed at various meetings throughout the province during the Easter holidays and altogether met with a fair measure of success. At Swanson on Saturday a fair crowd of spectators was present and some interesting sport was witnessed. Walker ran one of his best races this season to win the 100 yards handicap off 2yds. from Stevenson and Elliot. The 100 yds. local championship was won by G. Cutler. Stevenson, this year's leclmical College senior champion, was competing for the first time in open company and showed good form in winning the quartermile from L. Barker and running second in the. 100 yds. A. Blow came to the fore again by winning the 880 yds. from J. Dolan, while the mile was won by L. Barker, of the Papatoetoe Club, who scored over this distance at the East Tnniaki meeting last Saturday. The annual meeting of the Hamilton Athletic Club was held at Steele Park on Saturday, when several South Auckland championships were decided as well as a good programme of handicap events. The entries were good and the meeting was one of the best decided in the Waikato for some time. Griffiths' Two Titles. A. H. Griffiths was successful in both sprint championships, while the quarterniiie was annexed by A. L. Wall. Mills, who is well known to Aucklanders, was second in all three events. A H. Malcolm, who caused a sensation in the New Zealand 440 yds. hurdles championship, created a surprise by winning the 880 yds. championship from J. C. Thompson, who won the 120 yds. hurdles. N. Roberts had no trouble in the one-mile championship. Very few Aucklanders competed at this meeting and Hill, who scored a nice win in the" mile handicap, was the only one to have any success. C. Speake showed good .form in clearing sft. 6in. to win the high jump. The majority of the competitors at Hamilton were at Ngaliinepouri on Monday, when the annual, meeting was held before a large crowd of spectators. Malcolm again won the 880 yds., while in the mile Roberts reversed the result by just heating Hill, who Jiad won on Satuiday. J Shirley turned out once again and won tlie hop,'step and jump with 43ft. sin. Aucklanders did not, fare as well as expected in the inter-university tournament at. Wellington. 11. C. Garlick lost both his sprint, titles to F. H. Stephenson, of Victoria College. Finlayson was third in the half-mile, Adams third in tho inile walk and Francis second in the three miles run. These were the only placings gained in the running events. Victories, however, were gaind by J. W. Allan, who won the high jump with sft. 6in. and E. C. Wooller. the javelin throw, with 137 ft. s£in. «T. B. Stephenson, of Victoria College, ran a fine quarter-mile to win in 50 2-ss—a university record. Evans Out of Form.

The special invitation 880 yds. handicap which was really a trial for D. Evans created great interest. After a great race the ex-champion failed to produce his once brilliant finish and was beaten into third place by W. Ogg, the Wellington champion, who ran so finely in Auckland, and E. Watson, who was off the 13vds. mark. It is extremely doubtful now whether Evans will be selected for the. Olympic Games and he can he considered extremely unlucky ns his brilliant- performances in the past had placed him in the world's class. A. A. Cameron, the Otago all-rounder who won two jumping titles at the recent New Zealand championships, _ registered his best performance to date in clearing 6ft. 0 l-Bin. in an exhibition jump at the Waimate sports on Saturday. He can now be placed equal with F. Brady, of Wellington, and G. Sceats, of Auckland, who up till Saturday were the only New Zealanders who had cleared 6ft. On Saturday next the Papatoetoe Club will conduct 'its annual meeting on the club grounds and a large number of city athletes is expected to compete. On Saturday week the track season will close with n meeting under the control of the Ellerslie Club. A full programme of events from lOOvds. to three miles will be decided as"well as the usual cycling and field events. The opening run of the Calliope Harrier Club will be held on Saturday, starting from the Methodist Hall at 2.45 o'clock.
