IRELAND AND THE EMPIRE.
Sir, —The Irish question is still a very serious matter for the whole British Empire. Ireland has always been a firebrand, but surely the hour has struck when the rest of the Empire should take a firm stand and put Ireland in its proper place. This is not a. matter for GreatBritain alone, but for all parts of the Empiro. No ono part of our Empire should be allowed to secede, but should enjoy the fullest of liberty within its protecting walls. The same question was the real cause of the civil war in the U.S.A. Certain States wanted to secede, but. the other States would not allow them. The U.S.A. would not allow California to become an independent republic. If we allow Ireland to become a republic now years of trouble are ahead of lis. If the Roman Catholic Church has any real influence in Ireland for peace, now is its time, for as sure as Ireland becomes a raMitlfotheir fate will be the same as Spain's. A Lover of the Esipire.
