THE CITY MARKETS.

YESTERDAY'S AUCTIONS. GOOD DEMAND FOR ORANGES. Extra choice quality dessert apples met with a slightly improved demand at the Auckland City Markets yesterday, the values for other classes of apples remaining about the same as last week. Bananas firmed slightly in price as the result of last week's low values having increased tho demand. A shipment of Tongan bananas awived hv the Karetu last evening and will be offered to-day. There was also a better inquiry for pears. Tomatoes, however, eased considerably in prico and only extra choice, lines were fought. Outdoor grapes sold at very low rates, although thoro was a moderate demand. Lemons continued to bo very dull of sale. Sydney oranges and pines brought by ihe Ulimaroa sold readily on a bare market and commanded 14s to £1 a case. There was no shortage of seasonal vegetables. Large stocks of cauliflower and green peas have come forward from Ohaliuric and there arc heavy supplies of beans, pumpkins and celery. 1 lie vegetables met with a fair response, there being no outstanding changes in the values. The supply of poultry was small and consisted chiefly of old hens and ducks. The demand, however, was poor and only low prices were realised. The values for all grades of eggs and for farmers' butler remained unchanged. Prices for average quality lines were as follows: — FRUIT. IMPROVEMENT FOR BEEF. [from our own correspondent.] HAMILTON, Tuesday. A slight improvement in values for the offering of ox beef, duo principally to a smaller yarding, was shown at the weekly stock sale at the Frankton yards to-day. Competition for good quality cow beef was keen and prices advanced slightly over last week's rates. The offering of fat sheep was barely large enough to fulfil buyers' requirements and. as a result, the quotations for the majority of fat ewes and wethers were fully on a par with late rates. -There was an advance in prices for fat lambs. The first lots of an average entry of fat pigf met with steady competition, but bidding slackened as the sale proceeded, values declining to below last week's rates.
