EARLY ELECTRIC LIGHTING.
WELLINGTON ENTERPRISE. Wellington has the distinction of being among the first towns in thn Southern Hemisphere to install an electric plant for its streets," said Mr. M. Cable., general manager of the tramways department, when addressing the annual meeting of the Wellington branch of tho New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers. "At the end of 1887 the council called tenders for the lighting of tho streets by electricity by advertising in papers in Wellington, San Francisco and London. "When it is remembered that six years had not elapsed since the opening of the famous Pearl Street Station in New York, it. is evident that the council in office in this city 45 ye.ars ago contained men with progressive ideas."
