'J lie operations were evidently those of an experienced and clever thief. On what was one of his earliest attempts the thief was surprised at a house in Tomoana. Road, he made his escape ufter a short chase, by the occupant of the house, who, fortunately, came upon the intruder before he was ablo to remove anything. Tho burglar's activities were then centred on a block of houses toward the town end of Avenue Road West, where five adjoining residences were entered. The haul from this quarter included various sums of money from £2 5s to over £B, the total amount involved being about £25. The thief also took numerous articles of jewellery. A watch taken from one i house was valued at £lO 10s. In other j instances cash-boxes and money-boxes ! were stolen from this locality. ! Apparently the thief continued his operations to St. Aubyn Street West, where two houses were visited. AddiJ tional sums of money and a number of ! articles were stolen. Jn attempting to j enter a third house, the man was again | surprised and another chase ensued, but • once more he escaped. | Some of the money and articles stolen | were actually taken from beside sleeping I occupants of houses. Blandford, in the Square, j An auger was used tn bore a hole 1 through the front door, a lock being unI fastened. The precaution had been I taken by the owner of having an nddi- ! tional lock placed on the door, and this prevented the door from being opened. There were valuable stocks of furs on the premises. Earlier iri the week an unsuccessful attempt was made to enter, the premises of Collier's, furriers, in Broadj way. A bold effort was made recently to force an entrance into the boot and shoe shop of Mr. A. V. Oliver, also in the central ! part of the Square. Thieves are active in Auckland, two ; | premises having been entered, one, by I night, and the other during the day. { Jewellery valued at £SO and £3 in ! cash were taken by thieves who entered ! a house :n Domett Avenue, Epsom, and ! ransacked three bedrooms. In one bed- J room a. locked writing desk was forced j open anil two rings were, stolen, while, in another room a quantity of gold jewellery, comprising bangles, brooches and a watch, was secured. In another room the thieves took further jewellery, overlooking a, g"ld watch, which was in a suit in a wardrobe. In addition they took a purse containing £3. A small lock-up general store at Green Ray, on the Manukau Harbour, was entered on Thursday night and a quantity of confectionery and other goods was stolen. The thieves, who entered by forcing a window, did not remove any money.
