The Minister said the departments revenue was being asked to make a 'very big contribution this year to the State revenue, and it was expected to find a sum of £1.080,000 toward the general revenue of the country. Everybody knew that the Consolidated Fund was short of money, but lie-was of the opinion that it was not good policy to impose too heavy a taxation 011 a service such as the I' os ' and Telegraph Department for the benefit of the general revenue, otherwise a ve, y useful department might be overburdened* After all, the Minister added, it- vras » trading department, and lie believed that similar departments in other parts of { ' lo world had got into trouble in that waj* The department endeavoured to provide 8 service as cheaply as possible commensurate with the cost of administration, and it should not be asked to contribute t°° much by way of general taxes.
