FIRE IN RESTAURANT.
SUNDAY NIGHT OUTBREAK. DAMAGE NOT EXTENSIVE. Fire broke out, shortly after half-past ten last evening in the Cameron Cafeteria, a restaurant, and tea-rooms on the, first, floor of Palmerston Buildings, at. the corner of Queen Street and Customs Street West. The. Auckland Fire Brigade arrived before the flames had gained any appreciable, hold and succeeded in confining the damage to a small section of the restaurant.
Firemen gained access to the building from both the Queen Street and Customs Street entrances, but on entering the restaurant their task was made difficult by the dense clouds of smoke in the confined space. The windows on the Customs Street frontage were opened and. as the smoke cleared, the firemen were able to locate thp seat of the fire behind a serving counter.
The flames bad apparently broken out in the floor boarding and were rapidly gaining a. bold on the wall immediately behind the serving counter. A chemical hose, and extinguishers were sufficient to extinguish the flames, and the damage was confined to the counter and the space behind.
From a later inspection, there, was no indication as to how the fire started. The restaurant had been closed since yesterday afternoon.
