TASMAN SEA CABLES.
MEMORIES OF OLD " WAKA." FIRST NEW ZEALAND TERMINAL. The removal from Wellington to Auckland of the transtasman cable formerly operated by the Eastern Extension Cable Company, breaks the SydneyWellington connection established in 1917. The cables between Wellington and Sydney still contain sections of the first submarine cable laid across the Tnsman in 1376 The first cable had its hew Zealand' terminal at Cable Bay, Wakapuaka, Nelson, and it was linked to Wellington bv the Cook Strait cable. Cable Hay. m tiiose days, was commonly known as "Waka " In 1917 tho Tasinan cable was brought from Cable Bay to Titahi Bay and the direct Sydney-Wellington communication has been maintained ever since , , Two lines from Sydney come ashore at Titahi Bay, but one has not been worked for 18 months, and it is the working line that is to be transferred to the Muriwai Beach. The duplicate mav still be in working condition and it could, be repaired if necessary and the Wellington connection restored if it was desired to resume the Wellington terminal.
