RIFLE SHOOTING.

MATCHES AT LONG RANGES. HIGH SCORES REGISTERED. The weather was ideal for big shooting at the long ranges last Saturday, and the City Club members made some high scores. H. Simmonds dropped a point in elevation with his third and eight!) counters at 800 yards, and followed this with a possible at 900 yards, his second this season. This is tho best aggregate made at Penrose since Thompson finished with 99 over the short ranges early last year. A. G. Robertson also shot exceptionally well, his card reading 5, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, and 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 4, 4. His shooting this season has been a trifle below the standard he set last season, when he filled the position of runnej-up in the club championship. A. C. Watson made his, first appearance for almost twelve months and caused no surprise by running into third place with 4, 5. 5, 5, 5. 4. 5, 5, 5, 5, .and 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 4, 4. W. If. Thompson found conditions to his liking and registered 47 at each range. llis shooting has improved greatly this season. C. J. Robieson shot, well for 93 and will be one of the City representatives at the South .Auckland meeting at Easier. C. J. M. Clark was going for 97 with two shots to go, but finished with a magpie and a miss at, 900 yards, while A. f}. Degenholbe struck trouble at the long range after running on a possible at 800 yards. Of the others, S. Griffiths and F. Bowes both shot well at the first range, dropping two points each.

The Akarana Club was in trouble from the starfc at the close ranges, where difficult sighting appeared to trap most of the competitors. W. Powell was (op man with 91, followed by A. G. Smith, a B grade shot, with 90. Only four met) reached 16 or better at 200 yards, and several clean targets were signalled during the afternoon. The following is the 300 yds. score of one first-class shot: — 5, 5. 5, 0, 5, 5, 5, 4, 4, 4—42. It almost looks as if the black and white targets are no improvement on the blue and sand milita.ry targets at the short ranges, although at the middle ranges they are very popular.
