PORT OF NEW PLYMOUTH.

Friday For the first, time sinro 1008 the New Plymouth Harbour Board has decided to impose a rate which is calculated to produce £22,000. This decision was made after careful deliberation at a special meeting of tho board. A hope was expressed that an improvement, in trade would result in tho lifting of the rate, Tho main reasons for striking tho rate were tho dccrcaso in the trade of tho port., the drop in land revenue and rents and high exchange affecting interest on loans, said tho chairman, Mr. C. E. Bellringer. Tho harbour district is divided into three areas. In the borough of New Plymouth tho rate will bo levied in November and in tho other boroughs and counties in January or February of next year. The area to carry the bulk of the rate, £14,000, will be New Plymouth and the surrounding district..
