STAMP NOTES.
Newfoundland has just issued a v«ry, beautiful set of stamps. Among them are the portraits of King George, Queen Mary, Prince of Wales. Princess Elizabeth (Betty), salmon leaping rapids, Newfoundland dog, codfish, seal, fishing smacks, etc., really works of art. In 1914, Grand Duchess Marie Adelaide ruled over the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and stamps of that period bear her portrait. During the early stages of the Great War. she came under the displeasure of the Allies, and was removed from power, retired into a German convent, and two years later died there* She was succeeded by her sister, Charlotte, who became Grand Duchess. Later, married, her portrait appears on the current issue of stamps. The por* traits of her children appear on the various annual Charity Stamps, the latest, Christ., mas, 1931, being that of the infant Princess, Alix, and looks very nice indeed, l'he above country, is worth collecting. Those collectors who have stamps of Syria overprinted Alonaitis, take nota that the name has been changed to Lattaquie (Latakia.) Another country which may cause voii not little confusion is Soruth, Indian Native State. The current stamps, pictorial, are appearing with the native rendering, " Saurashtrawatch out for these. The United States of America, in October last year, issued a most interesting stamp, celebrating the surrender of Lord Cornwallis and the whole of hjs force, at Yorktown, United States, 150 years ago. The stamp is printed in two colours, background in red, central design, black. The central design contains three portraits: George Washington in the centre, and the Frenchmen, Roclumbeau and De Grasse, on either side. The size of the stamp is 0.89 x 1.46, and forms a most interesting addition to your album. New Charity Stamps have appeared this year from Belgium; portrait of Queen; Holland, four portraits of boys: Luxembourg, Princess Alix: Mozambique, mother and two children; Suriname, mother and child; Switzerland, four, three views, one portrait.
