HOTELKEEPERS' LOSSES.
EFFECTS OF DEPRESSION. NUMEROUS BANKRUPTCIES. The extent to which publicans in South Australia were affected last year by the depression is shown by the annual report of the superintendent of licensed premises, Mr. E. J. Thomas, which was presented to the Midland Licensing District Court on February 29. Mr. Thomas reported that 80 per cent, of the 160 changes of publicans' licences recorded during the past 12 months had been caused by the bankruptcy of the licensees. There had been a general reduction in tariffs for accommodation at hotels, the reduction having been as much as six shillings a day in some instances. The holders of 20 hotelkeepers' licences had omitted to apply for renewals, and they would have to apply for a certificate to a special magistrate within 14 days to enable them to carry on business until the next meeting of the Court.
