GERMAN PRESIDENCY.
FORTHCOMING ELECTION. STORMY CAMPAIGN BEGUN. (Received February 29, 0.45 p.m.) BERLIN. Feb. 28. The German Presidential election campaign opened to day with many clashes between Nazis, Communists and Socialists engaged in propaganda work. There were many casualties. The police intervened and 120 arrests were made. Herr Hitler, in a letter to Marshal von Hindenburg, protests against, restrictions and alleges calumnies against the Nazis. He demands to know what Marshal von Hindenburg proposes in order to " restore the principles of chivalry." The allegation that Herr Hitler lost his Austrian nationality because he deserted is repudiated by him in his letter. He encloses official documents showing that he was not liable to Austrian service in 1914. Ho says ho patriotically volunteered for the German army, in which he stayed five years.
The Presidential election in Germany is to be held on Sunday, March 13. The candidates are: Marshal von Hindenburg, the present President, Herr Hitler, ieader of the Nazis, and Colonel Ducst»rberg, nominee of the Nationalists and Steel Helmets organisation.
