CITY RATE PAYMENTS.

THREE-FOURTHS IN HAND, SATISFACTORY POSITION. Seventy-five per cent, of the current year's rates, amounting to £403,011, had been received by the Auckland City Council up to the close of last week. The collections since February 1 amouuted to over £136,000. The Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, remarked yesterday that the position was reiy satisfactory indeed, especially as the 10 per cent, penalty had not yet become duo on the last of the demands to be issued. If a further £80,379 were collected in March, the council would close the financial year with 90 per cent, of its rates in hand—the amount for which it had budgeted and upon which its estimates of expenditure had been based. Toward arrears from 1930-31 and previous vears £33,305 has been collected, as compared with £29,000 up to the. enrl of February a year ago.
