REDS ATTACKED.
BELLICOSE NEW GUARDS. FIERCE MELEE NEAR SYDNEY. (Received February 23. 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. Feb. 29. There were wild .scenes at Bankstown, 12 miles south of Sydney, when a detachment of the New Guard clashed with Communists. The trouble started when New Guardsmen broke up a meeting of the unemployed workers' movement at which revolutionary statements were being made. Hundreds of townspeople joined in a wild melee, which soon became too much for the local police to control. Reinforcements arrived and the fighting was quelled after repeated baton charges. Four arrests were made. Many people were injured by stones', stakes, flying glass and batons. The Police Commissioner, Mr. W. H. Childs, commenting upon the disorders, said he was determined that members of the New Guard were not going- to usurp the functions of the police, which was a legally constituted body pledged to preserve law and order.
The names of at least eight member* of the New Guard were secured and prosecutions will follow.
