AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

CARNIVAL HELD AT OTAHUHU FAST HUNDRED BY ELLIOT. DISTANCE RUNNERS IN FORM. A big crowd was present at Otnhu.hu on Saturday when an amateur athletic carnival was held at Sturges Park, an ideal athletic ground formed in an old crater with a natural grandstand on three sides for the spectators. The ground was in perfect condition. and, although the times were slowed up by a strong wind that blew xiglit down the field the racing throughout was close and exciting. A. J. Elliot ran a magnificent rnco to win the 100 yards in 10s dead, while K. Munro finished brilliantly in capturing the 220 yards. Owing to the leneth of the distance track there was a misunderstanding in the. 880 yards and an extra lap was run by lmstaKe, J. W. bavi dan profiting most and winning easily. * • F Cooper was right back to form and drew away in the last lup of the mile, to win by 10 yards, with Saviclan jnoiher 10 yards away third. . There were some outstanding performances nt the first annual championship meeting of the Technical College Old Boys' Amateur Athletic Club held at Ellerslie on Saturday before a large and • enthusiastic crowd of spectators. Dow gave a fine exhibition of running in winning the 440 yds., 880 yds. ana one mile events with comparative ease, and, although the times were not fast, this can be accounted for by the strong breeze blowing down the track. The high jump brought forward a new star in Steedman, who made a winning jump of sft. Gin. The greatest surprise of the day was the defeat of Gudsell. the Auckland walking champion, by Cameron in the half-milo event. The three local races were well contested and provided exciting finishes. V The Otago athletic championships decided to-day at Cariabrcok in a si«ady downpour of rain, most of the performance being excellent under the conditions. ' M A decided impression was made by £ A. Cameron, of Oamaru,' who won the jump, the hop. step and jump, and the high jump without being extended. The ground ' was sodden, but in the long jump he dij ' 22ft. 105 in., in-the, hiish jump sft. 6in., after which he retired, having beaten all .th, others, and in the hop, step- and jump 46ft. 7jin. The 100 yard 3 was run in 10 3-5s by H. J. Pearce, the winner putting: up a y try fine performance under the conditions. The finest race of the • day was the 880 yard 3, which was won by L. C. McLachl» a in 2m 4s. and. judging by form, the runners would certainly have broken two minules had the track been in good condition. The 440 yards was won by J . Pickering, of Invercargill, late of Wellington, who won by a yard in 53 seconds. J. G. Barnei won the mile in ta 83 4-ss, coming t 0 light with a wonderful sprint 50 yard! from home.
