GUIDE TO HOUSEWIVES. LOWER TREND OF PRICES. There has been a general downward tendency in the retail prices, of fruit and vegetables in the past week, although some lines have increased. Bananas and pears have reached phenomenally low values, selling at. Id to 2d, and 2d to 3d a lb., respectively. On ,the other hand, high quality tomatoes have risen Id to 3d and 5d a lb. The only nectarines available are ex cooler. They are realising 9d to Is in city shops. Good supplies of most varieties of peaches are obtainable at about late rates. Mushrooms continue to be plentiful and are about 3d a lb. cheaper than last week, at lOd to Is 3d. Some are available at 6d, but they are of rather inferior quality. Cucumbers, lettuce, cauliflower and. celery are all slightly cheaper, but peas, especially, and beans, have shown a firming tendency. No fluctuations of note have occurred in the rates for meat or fish, although supplies of the latter have been scarce in the past few days. Eggs, both hen and duck, have receded 2d from last week's rates, and are selling in Queen Street shops at Is 7d a dozen. Following are yesterday's prices *- FRUIT.
