AUCKLAND LAW SOCIETY.
PAST'' YEAR REVIEWED. FIDELITY GUARANTEE FUND. During 1931, there were 238 barristers and 528 solicitors practising in Auckland, according to tho annual report of the council of the Auckland District Law Society. This represents a decrease of three barristers and five solicitors compared with the figures for the preceding year. The fidelity guarantee fund, which has been in existence for two years, has increased public confidence in the legal profession, states tho report. Coincident with the fund additional regulations have been gazetted relative to the control of solicitors' trust accounts, and, with the support of the profession, these regulations will tend to preserve the fund. A difficulty with which the council has to contend is lack of library accommodation. A full set of Canadian Reports has been obtained, comprising over 250 volumes, and temporary shelving was necessary to accommodate the books. In view of present conditions, it is considered inopportune to hold the conference postponed by the Otago District Law Society last Easter, and any conference for the current year has also been abandoned tentatively. The report states that a large number of complaints was investigated during the year. Proceedings under tho Law Practitioners' Act were instituted in eight cases, in five of which the practitioner was struck off the roll, one practitioner was temporarily suspended from practice, while the two other cases are pending before the Court of Appeal.
