AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY.
FIRST MEETING OF COUNCIL.
The Auckland University College Council is rapidly approaching its jubilee, for it was 49 years ago to-day, on February 19, 1883, that the council held its first meeting. That meeting took place in the old district courthouse in Eden Street, and Sir G. M, O'Rorke was appointed first chairman. At that time the college had not yet opened, as (lie four original professors who had been appointed had not arrived from England. One of the decisions Beached by the first meeting was to apply for affiliation to the New Zealand University, and it was also decided to call for applications for the position of registrar at a salary of £IOO a year.
