DERATING OF FARM LANDS.

Sir,—l would like to draw the a (tention of those advocating the derating of farm lands to a statement made by the chairman of the Taupiri Drainage Board, Mr. L. Tt. Reid, who is reported to have said, "he was anxious to help the ratepayers in every possible way. If they were relieved of their county rates by a system of derating, landholders would be in a better position to pay for drain- • age work." I have always understood that derating was to remove an intolerable burden from the farmer, but Mr. Reid seems to think that the money at present paid or owing-to the county councils would be available for h;s drains. The Farmers' Union, in advocating derating, could not have foreseen a position like this arising. • From the Heights.
