ROYAL COMMISSIONS.
Sir, —Self-confession, whether it be of success or failure, is good for the soul. Apparently the members of the Coalition Ministry subscribe to this doctrine, and. recognising their own inability to deal with the problems for which country gave I hern a blank cheque in 'November last, are appointing commissions to investigate this and that problem; in fact, we are suffering from a plethora of academical, expert investigations. First we had the Economy Commission, then the Industries Commission, and now the Exchange or Financial Commission, with the promise of a Local Bodies'' Commission in the not far removed future. Sooner or later we might get a commission to ascertain the qualifications of the Ministers for their posts! No longer do we have "the strong lead" of which we heard so much during the election. We have responsibilities shelved on to Royal commissions, from which, be it noted, representatives of organised Labour are sedulously excluded. By these appointments the Ministers confess their inability to grapple with the problems for which they were elected to deal. If this sort of thing goes on. why not instal a dictator and be done with all the unnecessary waste occasioned by expensive and oftentimes futile Royal commissions and incompetent Ministers. As it is, representative government is in imminent danger of becoming a farce. Do the Job You Are Paid I<or.
