INTERPROVINCIAL CONTEST.
AUCKLAND'S REPRESENTATIVES
PROMINENT PERFORMERS
The selectors of the Auckland rowing eight, Messrs. C. C. Cairns, E. H. Buckler and S. B. R. Rutledge, have chosen the following crew to represont Auckland in the inter-provincial eightoar championships to be decided at Ticton next month:—E. A. Cotes, North Shore (str) ; F. Solomon, St. George's (7.); A. Ross, Waitemata (6); P. Williams, St. George's (5) ; R. Porter, Auckland (4) ; L. McCallum, North Shore (3); C. Chamberlain, Auckland (2) ; C. Oliver, North Shore (bow). Spare men: J. Biss, St. George's; V. Macfarlane, West End; and C- Scott, Auckland. Mr. T. Marshall, of the Waitemata Club, will be coach.
At a meeting of the Auckland Rowing Association last evening Mr. W. G. Mason, president of both the New Zealand arid Auckland Rowing Associations, in moving that the crew as selected b» approved, said the selectors should 1)9 complimented on the time and trouble they had given to the choice of the crew. Hip motion was carried unanimously.
Ihe interprovincial eights are io bo rowed on Picton Harbour on the afternoon of Easter Saturday, March 26. The length of the race will be two miles. The Halliburton-Johnston Cup is presented each year to the winning crew, and the winning province this year will receive a donation of £25. Cotes stroked the representative eight which competed in the interprovincial championships at Dunedin last March, and is present stroke of the North Shore senior four. Solomon lias rowed in the Sfc. George's senior four for the past threa seasons, and has many wins in inter-club racing. Ross rowed at Hamilton befor« coming to Auckland, and was a member of the New Zealand rowing team which went to the Empire games in Canada ill 1929.
Williams rows in the three seat in the St. George's junior four, which secured a win at the New Zealand championships at Hamilton on Anniversary Day. Porter is a. member of the Auckland junior four which has been successful this season in inter-club racing on the harbour. McCallum was mt.iden sculling champion last season, and is a member of the North Shore senior four. Chamberlain rows in the Auckland junior four, of which Porter is a member. Oliver was in the North Shore junior crew which reached senior status last year. Mr. Marshall rowed in New Zealand Expeditionary Force crews in England, and has a thorough knowledge of thn sport. He has been successful in coaching and training Waitemata Club crews.
It is intended to take the crew out three times a week for training purposes at present, and more intensive rowing will be indulged in as the date for the race draws near. It was decided that nominations for the position <sf coxswain would be called from all the clubs.
