TARIFF FOR CEYLON.
IMMEDIATE OPERATION. CALCUTTA, Feb. IL, The statement is officially confirmed that a number of new import duties have been imposed by the Ceylon Government for immediate operation. They include an ad valorem duty of 15 per cent, on imported machinery and a similar duty on lorries, vans, tractors and accessories. An increase of two rupees has been levied on refined sugar, and one and a-half rupees on unrefined sugar. The duties on manufactured tobacco and malt liquor have been raised by 30 cents. The greatest increase recorded in duty is on potatoes, which has been raised from 40 cents to one rupee a cwt.
The petrol tax has been raised from 50 to 60 cents a gallon.
