'A dispute regarding certain clauses fn a new award governing the employment of tallymen on the Auckland waterfront was considered by the Arbitration Court, yesterday. The secretary of the Auckland Employers' Association, Mr. S. E. Wright, appeared for the employers of labour on the waterfront and Mr. C. J. Sheppard appeared 'for the Auckland of which he is secretary. The principal point at issue was whether both permanent and casual tallymen ghoal'd be controlled by the award. The employers asked that the award should apply to all casual labour performing the duties of tallymen and that it should not applv <o permanent employees. On behalf of the unioi4, it was claimed that the award should apply to all workers performing the duties of tallymen at the port of Auckland and at outports. Another matter in dispute concerned th 6 rates of wages, the union asking for 8 considerable increase and the employers asking for a reduction. The employers claimed that casual tallymen should be paid Is lid an hour for a 44-hours* week. . For casual tallymen the union claimed 2s 9d an hour for ordinary time and for permanent tallymen £23 16s 8d a month, or £5 10s a week. The present rale is 2s sjd an hour for casuals and £4 10s a week for permanents, both amounts being less 10 per cent. Four tallymen permanently employed bv the Union Si earn Ship Company, Ltd., stated in evidence, in reply to Mr. Sheppard, that they were not anxious to be / included in tho award's provisions and that they would rather be free to make their own arrangements with their permanent employers. It was alleged by Mr. Sheppard that the witnesses had been "intimidated." The Court reserved its decisions.
