From the farmers' point of view great improvement in the weather has taken place. Certainly much more rain is needed, but anxiety for the present has been dispelled. The stock market generally has hardened and this seems due not so much to climatic changes as to a realisation of the improbability of further decline. There is as well, evidence of a slight swelling of confidence. occasioned no doubt by the better demand for our products abroad. Good rain on the east coast has stopped the exodus of sheep from that quarter, but many cattle are travelling this way. The inquiry is not strong, but no doubt buyers will .present themselves when the time arrives. Conditions as they affect the separate branches are:— BEEF. A short entry at the central yards this week caused a sharp advance in value, both ox and cow beef sharing tho improvement. Prime medium ox sold to 20s: plain Quality. 17s to 18s; prime cow, lfig to 17s: second quality, lis to 14s; plain, Ss to 10s. MUTTON. There has been no alteration in this section. Tho local demand is easily satisfied, sideyard offerings being sufficient. Ewes nr# chiefly handled direct by export companies. Ordinary grazing stock arouse little inquiry. although competition up to a point is axliilable for any lines that appear. Gisbome cattle naturally win preference, being much ahead in point of quality of anything bred locally. A better demnnd seems to have arisen for wearier heifer calves and with the approach of autumn this no doubt will strengthen. A little business has been done in "heifers in call" for forward delivery, and a few small lines have been traded for immediate transfer. No keenness, however, has yet been displaved. Values are:—Grown steers, £3 to £;j ss; 2!-year, £3 to £2 10s; IS month. 30s to :(ss ; fresh young cows, las to 255; stores. 7s fid to los; heifers in calf. £\ 10s to £5: weaner Jersey heifers, best. 20s to 32s fid; medium, 10s to 15s; off colours. 5s to 10s. •' STORE SHEEP. This branch has firmed during the week, better sales in all districts beigg recorded. Tw&rtooth ewes alone fail to participate, in "the movement, and this can onlv be accounted for by the heavy offerings lately submitted. No doubt as these-get absorbed a better tone will prevail. Store lamb values have strengthened considerably, dairy-' men showing keenness now that their pastures have had a freshening. Values are;— Two-tooth ewes, best, lis to 13s; smaller, from Ss; four and six-tooth ewes, best, lli to 12s Gd: medium, 9a Gd to 10a 6d; fouryear ewes. best. 9s Od to lis; medium.
