INCIDENT AT A DANCE.
MONEY TAKEN FROM PURSE. YOUTH ADMITTED TO PROBATION [nv TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORHESPfNDENT.] W ELL IN (5 TO N, Wednesday. Arising out of an incident wliicli occurred at a dance at Auckland, CJprald Robert Groom, a labourer, aged 18, was charged in the Police Court before Mr. E. Page, S.M., with stealing £1 9s 7d, belonging to Edna Drinnan. Ho pleaded guilty and was admitted (o probation. Sub-Inspector Lopdcll said the offence had been committed at a dance to which Groom had been "shouted." At the timo Groom had no money and no work. While sitting down, ho saw a woman's handbag alongside him. Ho opened it and took the money. Later he was accosted by the owner of the bag and when challenged admitted ho had taken 22s 6d from tho purse, lie handed tho money back, saying he thought it was all he had taken. Groom had two previous convictions. ''He is evidently at a loose end aril it may bo wise to have some restraint put on him," Mr. Lopdcll said. The magistrate said he had received a report from the probation officer and he proposed to admit Groom to probation for 12 months. He would have to accept what employment was appro* ?d by the probation oflicer.
