ADULT EDUCATION.

NO GRANTS FOR THIS YEAR.

" BAD BLOW FOR ASSOCIATION,"

KEEN INTEREST IN CLASSES.

Advieo was received at yesterday's meeting of the Auckland University College Council that no grants would bo paid to tho four university colleges for Workers' Educational Association purposes for tho current year.

"This will bo -a, bad blow for them," said tho president, Sir George Fowlds. "Tho association has done some very valuable work." lie added that, until the position had been gone into nothing could bo done.

"In view of tho small proportion of the educational expenditure devoted to adult education, there appears to bo no justification for cutting out entirely grants to the Workers' Educational Association," a prominent official stated yesterday. "If the grants must bo reduced, it would surely bo fairer that the reduction should bo in tho samo proportion as that applying to other branches of education. If the grants aro actually withheld, the association will bo very seriously affected." It was tho intention of tho association, nevertheless, to attempt to carry out a full year's programme, although it would bo hard pressed for finance. Classes had not fallen off and tho demand for tuition, especially in country districts, had been so great that if only adequate monetary support were given, the work of the association could bo extended very much. Tho official added that if it had not been for the Carnegie Trust's donation of £SOO last year tho position would havo been very much more serious.
