TAR AND FEATHERS.
| FRONT DOOR AND STATUES. I PUBLIC MAN'S RESIDENCE. ; Sir Charles Trevelyan, Lord Lienten--1 ant of Northumberland, and formerly British Labour Minister of Education, ; recently refused to discuss further a I dastardly outrage perpetrated at his resij dence. Wallington Hall, Camfco. when, j ' in dead of night, unknown intruders j | tarred and feathered the front door and j i statues in front of the entrance. j j The damage was plainly visible next ] | day. Four griffin statues in the mag- ! nincent grounds were beavilv coated j j with tar. and the stone puJars at the j j entrance of the bail also bore evidence or , I tarring. How the intruders set to wcrk j : is a mystery to the stas at the haiL ; ! Sir Charles and Lady Trevelyan were ; I away at the time, and the discovery of j j the outrage was made when they re- j ] turned on the following morning. I Villagers stated that they noticed noth- j | ins untoward in the village on the night of the outrage. "No strangers have been seen about the village." stated one lof them. We cannot understand why anybody should do such a thing. Evi- I dent.lv it is sheer spite against Sir Charles. | Wallington Hail was the scene of another outrage the day after the general election in October. Unknown men dashed up in a car and carried on the Lord Lieutenant's Hag. Later it was returned by post. Local police failed to find any clue to the perpetrators of that outrage, and they were baffled about the later affair. The belief was held in the village that whoever was responsible for these nocturnal raids knew the district well snd was conversant with ail fcir Charles j movements, and may live somewhere in j the vicinity of the hall.
