THE EAST COAST RAILWAY.
Sir, —Seeing that the Government is contemplating closing the East Coast railway through the Bay of Plenty, I suggest the following to the East Coast settlers and land-owners, and to everyone who is interested in any way in the progress of the district: —That they form a Land-owners' and Settlers' Association and lease the line from the Government for a term of years at a low rate of interest on, say, half capital cost, or, if preferred, that they purchase the line at a price from the Government. If this were done everyone would be interested in the progress of the district and the benefit it derives from the line, and many who use the service car or transport their produce and stores by lorry" would give up the practice and support the railway. Having an interest in the Bay of Plenty Development Company, I would invest £IOOO toward purchasing the line if 1000 or 1100 land-owners and settlers would do the same. John Whitney.
