BULLET STRIKES CAR.
MOTORIST'S CLOSE CALL. HOLE PIERCED IN WINDSCREEN. A narrow scape from injury was experienced by a garage proprietor. Mr. H. W. Brabant, of Whakatane, when the windscreen of his motor-car was pierced by a bullet, apparently fired from a passing car, as he was driving 011 the main highway about a mile north of Pokeno on Friday evening. The bullet passed through the glass directly in front of Mr. Brabant, but did not strike him, while Mrs. Brabant, who was sitting in the front seat of the car with her husband, also escaped injury. Mr. Brabant had been visiting Auckland on business and left the city in his car, a five-seater tourer, about 7 p.m. When he was about a mile north of Pokeno, 011 the Great South "Road, he noticed another motor-car approaching, and just when the car was about to pass, at a distance of from Bft. to 10ft., he heard the crack of a rifle or revolver. At the same time the windscreen of his car was struck, fragments of glass being thrown over his face and clothing. Mr. Brabant immediately stopped his car and alighted. The other car did not stop, but immediately increased its pace. The road .where he had stopped was very narrow and Mr. Brabant realised that by the time he had turned his car he would have very little chance of overtaking the other vehicle, so he did not set out in pursuit. He then inspected his car, finding that there was a small hole in the middle of the windscreen above the centre of the steering wheel, while the glass on the inside of the screen had been flaked by the impact. Mr. Brabant made a quick search of the back of the car, which contained luggage, but did not sec any sign of the bullet. i'n his arrival at Paeroa Mr. Brabant reported tho occurrence to the police and a further search of the car was made without finding the missile. While the police have arrived at no definite conclusion they arc inclined to consider that the shot was fired accidentally by an irresponsible person in the other car. who had been out shooting with a .22 rifle and who was " skylarking" with his companions.
