LAMBS FOR EXPORT.
EXHIBITION AT SMITHFIELD. PREPARATION OF CARCASES. Many visitors, including a number of breeders from the Wnikafo, attended the works of the Westfield Freezing Company, Limited, yesterday (Sunday) to witness the preparation of lamb for the special New Zealand display to be held at Smithfield early in the New Year, when group competition in export freezing classes will bo judged. The lambs handled were ■ those which had been exhibited at the Waikato show at Claudelands on Saturday. There were 225 separate entries, comprising 743 lambs, and theso were killed and dressed at Westfield, special arrangements having been made by Messrs. W. and R. Fletcher (N.Z.), Limited.
Twenty selected slaughtermen and the supervising experts of the works devoted unusual care and the keenest interest in the preparation of- the lambs so that this particularly fine line of Auckland-bred stock would appear at its best when displayed at Smithfield. The skill and care of the slaughtermen and the staff received ample testimony in a visit to the cooling-room, where an inspection of the hundreds of carcases failed to reveal the slightest fault or blemish. Special interest was taken in the weighing of the carcases of the prize-winning lambs. The names of the winning breeders and the weights of their lambs (in carcase) are as follows: — White-fgced,- pens o/ three lambs.—R. T. M. Martin (each lamb weighed 341b.), 1; Neil Reid (321b., 361b., 371b.), 2; D. B. Livingstone (401b., 411b., 431b.), o. Black-faced, pens of three.—J. Cassidy (361b., 361b., 381b.), 1; Tainui Estate (311b., 331b., 331b.), 2; Thomas Bros. (331b., 331b., 361b.), 3; R. T. M. Martin (321b.. 321b., 341b.), 4; S. Rhodes (311b., 321b., 371b.), 5. Mr. A. IJowlands, who arranged the show last year, said there had been gratifying efforts to promote the fat lamb trade in Auckland, and these had met with a. wonderful response. The growth of lamb exports from the Auckland district was going ahead by leaps and bounds, and the district had within its reach and capacity an export of 1,000.000 lambs.
