ON LENDING BOOKS.
If thou art borrowed by a friend, Right welcome he shall be To read, to study—not to lend, But to return to me. Not that imparted knowledge doth Diminish learning's store, But books, I find, if often lent, Return to me no more. Now slowly read, and often pause, Think much—the book keep clean, And when returned to me, let not The folded leaves be seen. But read this book with earnest prayer, That God your soul may bless With truth and love, and make you fit For everlasting rest. —J. A. Blyth, in the Glasgow Weekly Herald.
