OVERWORKED CLERGY.

PARISHES WITH NO CURATES. The serious problem of staffing llio English parishes has lately been discussed at Anglican conferences in England. There are now 2308 fewer clergy than in 1905, 1435 fewer than in 1914, and 417 fewer than in 1922-23. Last year the number of ordination candidates was 503. but an average yearly number of 630 is required for the next ten years. The Bishop of Southwark's Commission reported that the shortage of clergy is most serious in the densely populated dioceses. Several hundred incumbents are working single-handed in parishes that require a staff of two or three clergy. No fewer than 1139 parishes, with a population of over 5000, do not possess a curate and the incumbents in many cases are breaking down through over-strain. Many bishops encourage the greater use of the lay ministry and of deaconesses to instruct.
