EAST COAST ROAD.
ATTRACTIVE SCENIC ROUTE. GOOD PROGRESS WITH WORK. [from OUR OWN' fOKRESrONPFNT.] OPOTIKt, Thurpday. Such good progress bad been made with (lie construction of (he East, Coast Boad by the Public Works Department that motor-cars are, now able to travel to Waihou Bay, over 60 miles from Opotiki. A motory-lorry recently went as far as four miles past Waihou Bay. Two rivers have still to be bridged, and a, sum appears on the. Estimates for the Kereru, which, it is hoped, will soon be started, ft. is also hoped that the Government will grant- n sum of about £250 to make a. deviation to enable motorists to cross the Baukokore at a much easier ford than that now used. Two daily motor services now run between Te Kaha and Opotiki, which have proved of great benefit, especially in case of sickness or accident, as patients can bo brought to hospital under better and quicker conditions than in the old days of the launch. When a further stretch of road between Waihou Bay and Cape Buna way is completed, it will be possible to motor from Opotiki to Gisborne through some of the most picturesque scenery imaginable. Steps are now being taken by the Opotiki County Council to have scenic reserves put under proper control. It is confidently expected that within a year or two the coast road will be one of the most frequented motor trips in the North Island.
