DISMISSAL OF MATRON.
HOSPITAL BOARD'S ACTION. DEFENCE OF PROCEDURE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WAIHI, Wednesday. The action of the Waihi Hospital Board in giving the matron of. tho hospital, Miss Caldwell, three months' notice of termination of her engagement following her refusal to tender her resignation at tho request of tho chairman, Mr. T. Jowscy, was criticised by the DirectorGeneral of Health, Dr. M. 11. Watt, m a letter received at tho meeting of tho board last evening. Tho request, that Miss Caldwell should resign followed an inquiry by the board into a complaint by a former nurso that there been no justification for tho matron to sign her conduct reference as "only fair," tho board then finding that the grounds on which tho nurse's conduct was so described were trivial. Dr. Watt said if the Nurses and Midwives' Registration Board had not already taken action on tho matron's behalf following what, ho said, appeared to him to bo "a most inadequate inquiry," ho would, ori the facts before him, have recommended that body to investigate the matter. It was decided to reply denying the' suggestion that the inquiry had been inadequate. Members protested against tho criticism and contended that the board could havo come to no other decision on the evidence submitted.
