EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD.
The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of November 12, 1881:
The headmastership of the Auckland College and Grammar School, rendered % r acant since the resignation of Mr. Farquhar Macrae, has at length been filled. In the course of yesterday Sir George Maurice O'Borke, as chairman of the Board of Governors, received a telegram from the Agent-General of the colony in London to the effect that the commission having authority for that purpose has selected from among the candidates Mr. Charles Brown, 8.A., Oxon. (a classical honour-inan). No further particulars were given, but it is probable that Mr. Brown will proceed to the colony without delay. The salary is £7OO a year, with 10s capitation fee. A sum of £l5O is allowed for the expenses of the new headmaster in coming to the colony. Only three members of the present British Parliament were in the House oi Commons when William IV. died in 1837. They are Mr. Christopher Talbot, Mr. C. P. Villiers and Mr. W. £. Gladstone. The Queen has the advantage of them all in age and in the promise of a long life. When the Emperor of China travels in public 100 men dressed just like him travel with him so that his identity cannot be discovered. This is embarrassing to would-be assassins. One of the novelties patented for Mackav's new theatre in New \ork is, it is said, a seat which disappears when the occupier rises, leaving the entire floor of the auditorium clear. Legislature will probably oblige all theatres to adopt this patent 'seat, which should remove al. danger from panics and crowding.
