ALLEGED "DOPE GANG."
SYDNEY KACECOUBSES. INCIDENT ON SATURDAY. NEW ZEALAND HORSE INVOLVED. * • 9 - * *- " - By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. SYDNEY, Kor. 2, It is revealed that the New Zealand horse Gold Day was distressed npon returning to the stalls after having run an indifferent race in the Flying Handicap at the Moorefield Racing Club's meeting on Saturday. He showed unmistakable signs of having been doped. Later he responded to treatment.. There is a suggestion that a " dope gang'' is operating on the Sydney courses. The trainer of Gold Day is at a loss to account for the occurrence. Gold Day is a four-year-old gelding by Day Comet—Poi. He is owned by Mr. D. "Jackson, of Te Aroha. and trained by Mr. J. F. Eva, also of Te Aroha. He won a number of races in the Auckland district last season and was sent to Australia last July. Writing under date of October 26 the Sydney correspondent of the New Zealand Herald said: —"Gold Day has hardly been troe to his name so far in Sydney or shown the form which took him into third place in the last Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. On Saturday at Canterbury he was a big fancy for a six furlongs high-weight handicap. Beginning smartly, he was not able to hold his position and was compelled to go very wide round the turn. Over the concluding stages he came on well to run second to Calendo. " Gold Day has not been too Incky in his races in Sydney. Last week, however, he galloped brilliantly on two mornings at Randwick and those performances encouraged his party. Although beaten, he ran well enough to say that he should make complete atonement before returning Home. Strangely enough, T. Webster rode Gold Day, too, and had all the misfortune of the race."
