EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. DEATH OF LADY WYNYARD. The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald cf November 3, 1881: In our obituary column will bs found recorded the death of Lady Wynyard, relict of Lieutenant-General Wynyard, who was Officer Administering the Government of New Zealand for a brief period a quarter of a century ago, and the first Superintendent of the Province of Auckland, while colonel of the 58th Regiment. At that date Lady Wynyard was the leader of Auckland's society and presided gracefully over the series of hospitalities dispensed at the residence of her husband. On the return of the 58th to England Lady Wynyard Secompanied General Wynyard to Europe. On his death at Bath she returned to Auckland and has since lived in great privacy in Grafton Road. Of the four sons of the deceased lady only one, Mr. Robert Wynyard, of Epsom, survives. George Wynyard, the eldest, served in the. 58th and died in England; Henry, who had obtained a staff appointment, died on the way out to the Cape; and Gladwyn, who was alsa an officer of the 58th Regiment, found a. resting place many years ago in th 9 North Shore Cemetery. One by one the old names which bring back the past are being blotted out. but among those that cf Wynyard will have an endearing place in the "early history of the province. The total force at she front (Taranaki) rnav now be summed up roughly in round numbers as follows: —Constabulary, nearly 900; local volunteers, 500 or 600-, volunteers from other places, nearly 1000; oi in all so met hing like 2500 men. The Government has been obliged to refuse al offers from every part of the colony sinc< October 29. Mr. Brvce telegraphed ver; positively not to send any more men at present as he did not want them, and a; an excessive number would embarras. rather than assist him.
