RUSSIAN PRODUCTS.
SUGGESTED PROHIBITION. DUNNAGE ON STEAMERS. FARMERS' UNION OPINION. A debate on the subject of Russian tjado and possible dumping took place ;it the meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, in Wellington last week, when it, was agreed to urge tho Government, to support any step taken by Great Britain in prohibiting importation of Russian produce. A letter from Mr. A. Seed, secretary to tlie New Zealand Sawmillers' Federation. said that the Russian dunnage was bought in London so that ships' holds could be fitted up with it for the reeep tion of New Zealand cargo on the journey out. It certainly displaced New Zealand timbers hitherto used for the pur pose. So far as was known, no Russian timber had been actually landed in New Zealand, apart from small quantities of barrel staves and plywood, but the sawmillers were apprehensive that such dumping might take place at any time, as by lesser duty and lesser cost of exchange New Zealand offered a distinctly better market at the present time tljan. Australia. The president, Mr. W. J. Poison, said the Russian policy was to flood the world with produce at prices which would ftive them tho opportunity of breaking down social conditions. Russia was up against everything the people of the British Empire stood for. Possibly later on Russia would be dumping all sorts of things into New Zealand and other countries. with serious results to the producers. Mr. R. D. Duxfield said he could not see any good in doing anything which was going to stir np strife. Another speaker said some people who had been in Russia advised that Russia should be left alone to work out her own destiny.
