PLIGHT OF COALMINES.
INDUSTRY AT HIKURANGI. ADDITIONAL ORDERS NEEDED. [nv TEr.EGKAnr. —own correspondent. ] WHANGA RET, Thursday. The seriousness of the mining position at Hikurangi and the necessity for obtaining additional orders to keep the industry functioning were emphasised by a deputation comprising Messrs. T. Mitchell. C. V. Stringer, J. A. Finlayson and 11. W. Crawford, representing the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce, A. Wood and J. Scott Davidson, representing Wilsons Cooperative Collieries, and li. Nesbit and 11. Ilawkin, representing the Hikurangi Town Board, which waited upon Mr. A. J. Murdoch, M.P., to-day. Mr. Murdoch said he had used every possible mean's to get tho Railway Department to take more orders from the North. Tho department already had a contract with the Taupiri and other Waikato mines. He had made a suggestion to tho department that coal could be stored in Auckland and had received a reply that a certain amount of coal had to bo taken from the Waikato. Mr. Murdoch assured tho deputation that he realised the importance of securing additional orders and said he would do his best in the matter. He also promised to give immediate attention to the raising of finance through the Unemployment Board.
