AGRICULTURAL SHOWS.
FEATURES IN BRITAIN. NEW ZEALANDER IMPRESSED. A Bay of Plenty farmer and breeder of cattle, Mr. H. G. Lever, returned from England by the Rangitiki yesterday. His visit to the Old Country was made primarily to attend the leading agricultural shows and observe farming and marketing conditions. In an interview Mr. Lever said he saw the shows at Warwick, Tring Park and Edinburgh and, through the good offices of the High Commissioner, Sir Thomas Wilford, inspected the Royal Farm at Windsor Castle. England, he said, could give New Zealand many points in how to run agricultural shows. The stock on exhibition were better dressed and were promenaded to better advantage. At Warwick splendid success was achieved by holding a military tournament in conjunction with the Royal Show. "It was one of the finest shows I have ever seen," said Mr. Lever. "I came across breeds of cattle and pigs 1 had never seen before, many of them from tin; Highlands of Scotland. It was an education for any New Zcalander." During an extended stay on the island of Jersey JMr. Lever was afforded the opportunity, through the kindness of Captain Blithero, of the Manor Farm, of inspecting practically every herd on the island. They impressed him very greatly. "All the cattle are tethered, as the holdings arc chiefly small in area, and cultivation is very intensive," said Mr. Lever. "My greatest disappointment was that I was not able to bring back some Jersey Island cattle with'me owing to the stringency of the foot-and-mouth disoaso embargo. "The authorities would not hear of it, even when the breeders offered to tranship the slock at Plymouth without the necessity of landing'them. 1 should say that, the majority of tho cattle are now going to America, where they pay big prices for them."
