SOCIETY OF ARTS.

ANNUAL MEETING HELD. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. "1 feel we may reasonably consider wo have experienced a fairly good year," said '■ Dr. E. 13. Gunson. president of the Auck- ! lend Soeielv of Arts, in presenting hi* i report at the annual meeting last evening. ; Dr Gunson said he regretted that owing ! to the economic depression so many members had resigned. The society had rei cently made a special effort to obtain new ! members, however, and as a result about | 80 additional honorary and working mem- | bers had been enrolled. The membership now exceeded 400, and it was hoped it would increase to 500 during the corning yea r. The president referred to the generous act of the Governor-General and the Lady Filcdisloe in presenting a sum of money as a prize for the best design for a medal, and a further sum as an endowment, the interest from which is to l>e expended in Lho purchase of a silver medal —from the winning design—to be awarded annually for the best landscape exhibited at the society's exhibition. The competition for the design had attracted some 20 entrants, whose work was all of a high standard. Tlv prize had been divided among two competitors, Miss E. M. Helheririgton and Mr. F. Noel Bamford, the latter providing the design for the obverse of the medal and Ihe former the reverse. It was decided to amend the rules so that members of accredited societies in other parts of the Dominion might be admitted to the Auckland Society without first submitting specimens of their work.
