STATE LIFE INSURANCE.
TRANSFER OF DEPARTMENT. PRESENT BUILDING TO GO. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. The staff and the records of the Government Life Insurance Office in the course of a few days will be transferred to a building in Fcatherston Street, to which the finishing touches are now being given. The tenants in the present building aro also to transfer to new quarters for tenders closed to-day for the demolition of the red brick structure which has housed the department for so many years. It is now regarded as unsafe in tho event of an earthquake. /> The successful contractor is to demolish the building and clear the site in six months. It is understood that designs for the new building to be erected on the site for the Government Life Insurance Department have been submitted but not yet approved. Before work is commenced 011 the new building tests of the foundations of the site, which is on reclaimed land, are to be made by the Public Works Department. The new building is expected to be one of six to eight storeys, with room for other Government departments.
