WATER FOR MANGERE.
COMMENCEMENT OF WORK. COMPLETION IN 18 MONTHS. The water-supply scheme for the Mangere Bridge, Favona and Mangere East districts has been commenced and the work of excavating the site for the reservoir to be erected on Mangere Mountain is now being carried out by contractors. It is anticipated that water will be available to residents in about a year or 18 months. The contract for the supply of the pumping plant has been let to an English firm and tenders for the supply and laying of pipes will be called later. The scheme was made possible by a loan of £65,000, of which £47,000 is to be spent on the reticulation of the greater part of the Mangere Riding, with the exception of the Ihumatao and Pukaka areas. The services in tho Mangere Bridge and Mangere Crossing portions of the district will be brought up to date. The reservoir will have a capacity of 500,000 gallons, with a minimum pressure of about. 701b., the difference between the heights of the reservoir and the lowest point served being about 350 ft. There is a main shaft of 75ft., from the bottom of which three 6in. bores have been sunk a further 70ft. Water will be pumped from the bottom of the shaft by means of the latest electrical and semi-automatic machinery. The diameter of the mains will be not less than 4in. and this will provide firefighting facilities. The supply is considered adequate for the needs of the district for many years. A fu»ther source has been found at the Spring Reserve, Black Bridge.
