CURING CALFSKINS.

Sir, —In reply to your correspondent "Waipareira," I forward two methods for curing skins. Mix to the consistency of a stiff paste two tablegioonsful of flour, two of powdered alum/ and one of common salt. Smear this mixture over the pelt, which has been previously stretched on a shady wall. Leave for three days, then rub pelt with pumice stone. The second method is as follows ; —Remove loose bits of fafc from the pelt. Place in cold water for 24 hours, frequently changing the water. Then drain the skins; place flat on a board, fur downwards. Apply dressing to pelt and rub well in. Dressing is made thus: One pint water, one and a-half ounces lump alum, one large tablespoonful salt. Boil together for five minutes and use warm. Fold over pelt and leave for 24 hours. Repeat again next day; then hang up to dry, which must be very slow, frequently rubbing, pulling and stretching the pelt until thoroughly dry. Then rub pelt smooth with pumice stone. Either of these methods is satisfactory and may be used for any pelt. If the fur needs washing care must be taken not to wet the pelt. Experienced.
