OBITUARY.

MR. BARTHOLOMEW SHEEHAN. EX-SUPERINTENDENT OF POLICE. The death of Mr. Bartholomew Sheehan, a former superintendent of police, occurred in a private hospital at Auckland yesterday. Mr. Sheehan, who was 73 years old. had lived iu retirement for several years. During his service of over 10 years in the police force, he was stationed for long periods in various centres of tho Auckland provincial district. Joining tho police force on January 6, 1879, he served first with the Armed Constabulary. He was transferred to tho civil police in 1882, his first station being Timaru. Later he served at Greymouth, Wellington, and Auckland. Mr. Sheehan's first station charge was To Aro, Wellington, after which he served successively at To Kuiti and at Whangaroi, where he was stationed from 1901 to 1909. Transfered to Kawakawa, he reached the rank of sergeant. Successive appointments wcro to Christchureh, Waihi and to Newton, whero ho spent five years. While ho was in charge at Newton ho was made a sub-inspector. Wellington was his next station, and his term of four years there included (ho period of the 1913 strike. From Wellington Mr. Sheehan went to Timaru, but after nine months there ho was promoted to the ranK of inspector and transferred to Auckland. His next move was to Hamilton, where ho was in charge for four years. Early in 1922 ho was transferred to Christchureh, with tho rank of superintendent, in charge of tho Canterbury ami Westland districts. Mr. Sheehan retired from the force on September 18, 1923. In a long career in many centres, ho was associated with tho detection of numerous serious crimes, tlio last of note being one concerning a Maori named llakaraia, who was convicted and hanged for tho murder of a workmate after two juries had disagreed. Mr. Sheehan is survived by his widow. Tho funeral will take placo at the Waikaraka Cemetery to-morrow. MR. HENRY CHARLES SMITH. Tho death has occurred at his residence, 10, Penrvn Road, Mount Eden, of Mr. Henry Charles Smith, aged 72. He was born at Melbourne in 1859. and came to New Zealand three years* later. His father, Mr. 11. Smith, was one of the staff brought over from Melbourne by Messrs. Holmes and Richardson, the contractors for tho Port Lvttelton tunnel. Mr. Smith joined the railway service at Heathcote in 1873, and spent tho earlier years of his career in Canterbury. In his early twenties he was promoted to stationmaster at Kirwee, and subsequently held the same position at Fairlie, Featherston. Mosgiel, Masterton and Palmerston North, where ho served for 14 years, retiring on superannuation in 1913. He then came to Auckland to reside, and from 1915 to 1919 returned to the service to assist the department during the time so many of the staff were on active service. Mr. Smith is survived by his widow and daughter and two sons, namely, Mrs. E. H. Tyler, of Rotorua; Mr. C. L. C. Smith, of Wellington; and Mr. 11. L. P. Smith, of Ohakune. MR. WILLIAM MORRIS. The death occurred on Wednesday at Orua Bay, Manukau Harbour, of Air. William Morris, aged 78 years, who was well j known in Onehunga and adjoining dis- ! tricts. Mr. Morris was born in Onehunga and lived there until recent years. Ho frequently visited Orua Bay and some seven years ago he took up his residence there. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and six daughters, and there are 20 grandchildren. MRS. CONSTANCE HOWARD. A direct link with the arrival in New Zealand of Captain William Hobson, the first Governor, has been severed by the death of Mrs. Constance Howard, of Sunnyside Road, Mount Eden. Mrs. Howard, who was 64 years of age, was the widow of Mr. George Selwyn Howard and the youngest daughter of the lato Mr. William Young, first collector of customs at Auckland. Air. Young, a native of England, was residing in Sydney when he was appointed to the staff of Captain Hobson, and he undertook diplomatic duties in connection with the annexation of New Zealand. MR. W. R. OWENS. [from our own correspondent.] TE AWAMUTU, Thursday. The death occurred in tho Waikato Hospital this week of Mr. William Ross Owens, a well-known resident of Te Awamutu, aged 54. Air. Owens was born at Kilmarnock, Scotland, and at the age of 17 enlisted in the British Army for service overseas, -and served with the forces in India, taking part in the Chitral and Tiruh campaigns in North-west India. At tho end of his service in India in 1900 ho was returning homo when his regiment was ordered to South Africa, where ho spent more than a year in the operations against the Boors. He continued in the .Army for a few years. On the outbreak of the Great War lie rejoined and saw servico in France. About 11 years ago he emigrated to New Zealand with his wife and family of two sons and two daughters, and settled at Hairini. About seven years ago Mr. Owens met, with an accident that resulted in (lie loss of an arm, and soon afterward lie removed to To Awamutu. Sinco his residence iu To Awamutu Air. Owens had been a keen member of the local Returned Soldiers' Association.
