MAORI OUTLAW TE KOOTI.
HEAVY DEFEAT RECALLED. The 62nd anniversary of one of the most severe defeats* suffered* by the Maori outlaw Te Kooti, who ill the late 'sixties terrorised a large portion of the North Island with his marauding bands of followers, occurs to-day. On September 25, 1869, Te Kooti, with a force of about 300, attacked Tokaanu pa, which was held by 250 friendly Maoris. Colonel T. McDonnell, of the Taupo Field Force, who was visiting the pa, led tlio natives with a detachment of his own escort against Te Kooti. A severe engagement ensued, and after putting up a gallant fight the hostile natives were driven off, leaving about 30 dead and wounded. The Ilauhaus were well supplied with ammunition and were able to contest every inch of the ground over which they were forced to retreat. 1® Kooti escaped and later continued hii depredations.
