CITY'S WATER CHARGE.
COMPLAINT BY NEWMARKET. REQUEST FOR REDUCTION. A request for a reduction of 3d a 1000 gallons in the price of water supplied by the City Council lias been made by the Newmarket Borough Council, which recently considered tho present charges as tho result, of representations by large consumers in the borough. "It should be possible for I lie City Council to at least supply outside bodies at the same rate it charges its own consumers," wrote the clerk, Mr. H. Wilson. "The outside authorities purchase their supplies :in bulk and play a largo part in maintaining the low price level enjoyed by city consumers, as well as the financial success of the undertaking. It may be pointed out that the Onehunga Borough Council charges its own consumers Is a 1000 gallons, but is prepared to supply contiguous local bodies purchasing in bulk at a lower figure, lOd a 1000 gallons. "While it may be suggested that this question is more or less in abeyance pending the (submission of certain proposals in regard to amalgamation, it is undeniable that an early settlement of this problem, which constitutes a definite grievance in the minds of many associated with the outside bodies concerned, would enable the proposals to be considered in a more roceptive and favourable atmosphere than that which at present exbts," lie concluded.
