OBITUARY.

MR. R. D. MEAGHER. SYDNEY, Sept. 18. The death has occurred of Mr. Richard Denis Meagher, a well-known lawyer and a former member of the New South Wales Legislative Council, aged 65. The late Mr. Meagher, who was' Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, 1913-17, was born at Bathursfc on January 11, 1866. He entered Parliament in 1895. was Chairman of Committees and Deputy-Speaker, 1910, president, of the New South Wales political Labour movement, 1913-14, Lord Mayor of Sydney, 1916 and 1917; was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1919 and resigned in 1921. He was a member of the Royal Commission of Inquiry-into the detention of William Cresswell—a claimant to the Tichborne estates—in a mental hospital..
