WHY WOMEN LIKE PRODIGALS.
The prodigal attracts women strongly, even irresistably, although he may be blamed and cold-shouldcred by men. Vitality shows in his eyes, most surely not dimmed by study, and they invite woman to adventure. So are women drawn to him and he to them Outward charm he may have in full measure—a gay smile, a handsome face, a voice whose modulations can soothe any qualms which prudence and conscience may arouse. He makes no appeal to her intellect, but ho plays to her Pan's music. His nature —sunshine, thundercloud and rainbow—fascinates her with its bright colours and dark shadows. To him the economic machine seems a dull clock-work affair. His impulses cannot keep time with it. He flits hither and thither like a butterfly until, maybe, when debt, or any real trouble comes, he returns to woman for sympathy and comfort. It is rarely refused him. " I am worried to death about him," she may say, but she goes on caring for him. His life seems to her like a dangerous tight-rope dance and so is aroused her protective instinct, which is so strong in woman. His very waywardness appeals to her. Her ingenuity is taxed in planning ways out of his " scrapes." She feels responsible for him as guardian and counsellor, and this gives her a sense of power and importance which is very flattering to her ego.
